Tooth Extraction in Nundah, QLD

Our goal is always to help you keep your natural teeth for a lifetime. However, there are circumstances in which tooth extraction is the most appropriate option. It's never the first choice, but when a tooth can't be preserved through other treatments, removing it may be necessary to protect your overall oral health and wellbeing.

At Nundah General & Emergency Dental, Dr Legin provides tooth extractions based on thorough clinical assessment and your individual needs. The decision is always made carefully, with your input and understanding of the process.

The need for extraction is determined only after a clinical assessment and a thorough discussion of your treatment options. When appropriate, Dr Legin will also explain alternative treatments so you can make an informed decision about what's best for you.

What Your Appointment Will Involve

During your extraction appointment, a local anaesthetic is typically used to ensure you don't feel pain in the treatment area during the procedure. If you're feeling anxious about the appointment or the extraction is more complex, sedation options are available and can be discussed beforehand.

The procedure itself and the post-treatment care may vary depending on your individual circumstances. You'll receive clear instructions for caring for the extraction site afterwards to support healing and recovery. This includes advice on managing any swelling, maintaining oral hygiene around the area and knowing what to expect in the first few days following the procedure.

When Extraction Might Be the Right Choice

There are several situations where tooth extraction may be recommended, including:

Severe Decay

Extensive tooth decay that's beyond what fillings or root canal treatment can address.

Gum Disease

Advanced gum disease that has compromised the tooth's supporting structures.

Tooth Crowding

Overcrowding that needs to be addressed before orthodontic treatment.

Tooth Fracture

A cracked, fractured or damaged tooth that can't be restored.

Third Molars

Wisdom teeth causing discomfort, infection or crowding issues.

Acute Infection

Teeth affected by infection or abscess that require management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Following proper post-operative care after a tooth extraction is essential for promoting healing, minimising discomfort and preventing complications. Our team provides comprehensive aftercare instructions to ensure your recovery proceeds smoothly.

What to Do After Surgery

Immediately after your extraction, bite down on the gauze pad placed over the extraction site firmly for at least 30 minutes to help control bleeding and allow a blood clot to form. This clot is crucial for healing, so avoid disturbing it during the first 24 hours.

To support optimal recovery, please follow these guidelines:

  • Apply ice packs to the outside of your face for 15-minute intervals to reduce swelling
  • Avoid rinsing, spitting forcefully or drinking through a straw for the first 24 hours, as this can dislodge the blood clot.
  • Take any prescribed pain medication or antibiotics as directed
  • Eat soft foods and avoid hot liquids, hard or crunchy foods for the first few days
  • Rest and avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 24 hours
  • Elevate your head when lying down to minimise swelling and bleeding
  • After the first 24 hours, rinse carefully with warm salt water several times daily to keep the area clean

When to Contact Your Nundah Dentist

Some bleeding, swelling and discomfort are normal following an extraction. However, if you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain, signs of infection or any concerns during your recovery, please contact our Nundah dental practice immediately on (07) 3916 2555.

Dr Legin and our team are here to support you through every stage of your healing process.

Looking After Your Oral Health Afterwards

As with all dental treatments, extractions carry potential benefits and risks, which will be discussed with you before we proceed. Maintaining regular dental visits can help identify issues early and support your ongoing oral health.

In some cases, further treatment may be recommended following an extraction to restore function or appearance. If you're interested in replacing the extracted tooth, options such as bridges or implants can be discussed when appropriate. Our team can provide guidance on planning for these restorative options if they're suitable for your situation.

We'll also offer advice on how to maintain your oral health and prevent future dental complications. This includes guidance on hygiene practices, dietary considerations, and monitoring any changes in the mouth.

Ready to Discuss Your Options?

If you have concerns about a tooth or believe an extraction may be necessary, you can arrange a consultation at Nundah General & Emergency Dental. All treatment decisions are made based on clinical assessment and your preferences. We're here to support you, not rush you.

Our team is available to answer your questions, provide information about the procedure and support you throughout your treatment journey. Don't hesitate to reach out.
